A New Law Dictionary Richard Burn John Burn Books

As of this date, I see no sign of Vol. 1 being available for this two volume 1792 legal dictionary. For both volumes, see the 2010 publication (each volume sold as a separate paperback) that Amazon has as of today.

Also, note that "to keep costs down" (sic), this print-on-demand volume has not been proof read; has had its table of contents and index (to the extent it had either) removed. This is because they don't want to have to raise the price (sic) by having to re-jigger the page numbers. All of these items are big losses as this "dictionary" is hard enough to deal with just from the different, then-current idea of what this term meant.

I don't get it. I thought computers could do these things inexpensively.

Still, these TWO volumes are among the small list of dictionaries for this time period that Scalia recommends using, for the objective historic meaning, in "Reading Law: The Interpretation of Legal Texts", and it is the only one that was actually originally published in 1792. It is still, of course, an English law dictionary.

ADDENDUM
Having this version of Vol. 2, I bought the first volume of the above-mentioned 2010 publication (also on Amazon) (each of the two volumes sold separately here also). This gives me several more reasons to recommend this 2010 publication fior for both Vols. 1 and 2. The 2010 reprint actually still looks like a dictionary, which is nice and, also convenient. For example, in the 2010, but not in this 2012 reprint, each new entry actually retains its double-space separation; and, also, its bold print. Just as in a modern dictionary, this means you can easily see each separate entry and, using them, look for the entry you want alphabetically. The 2012 reprint is quite hard to use in comparison. The 2010 reprint publication was published ,digitally, by some means that was more directly from the microfilmed pages of the original. On a bit of a downside, this means that a few entries in the 2010 reprint are printed a bit uncearly. The 2012 reprint involved a computer re-typing of some kind, so there is no such variation in print darkness. I found the few spots of light print more enjoyable as it is more "authentic"; and, it is still readable. So, that part is well worth it to me. Go with the 2010 2 volume reprint.

The 2012 backcover or intro states that a copy of it can also be downloaded for free somehow. I did not find it, but I did not have any interest in working hard to find it.
